IN DEDICATION

This first issue of Satchel Lane is dedicated to my father, William Wingo.

For twenty-nine years, he was the publisher of The Power, a Christian magazine that shared church calendars, announcements, and community news from across the state. The publication reflected his deep commitment to supporting the Black church and the communities it served.

He was confident, loud, curious, and entirely himself. Always sharply dressed, proud of his Virginian roots, and impossible to overlook. He loved big and gave generously.

Whenever he answered the phone, his greeting was always the same: “YOU GOT THE POWER!”

He passed away in March, before he could see Satchel Lane begin. But his example is part of its beginning, and I’m carrying his words with me as I put this first issue into the world.

This first issue is for him.
